Tim Tolson is the director of IT policy and outreach team in
Information Security office at the University of Virginia. InfoSec works in partnership with units and individuals across the university to formulate information technology policies, assess security risk, establish strategic direction, comply with security and privacy laws and regulations, provide security education and training, implement security safeguards, track security incidents, develop mission continuity plans, and related activities. The IT policy and outreach team partners with units and individuals across the University of Virginia to formulate and interpret information technology policies and offer information security awareness training. He holds a Ph.D. and Masters in Psychology from the University of Virginia (major in community psychology and minor in quantitative methods) as well as a BA in Psychology and Religion from the same institution. He has extensive experience in information technology in higher education. Prior to joining information security group at UVA in 2008, for 10 years he managed UVa's central research computing support group and was one of the three principals in the creation of the
Scholars' Lab, a joint, collaborative support, learning, and work space within Alderman Library at UVa. He is a 2005 Frye Leadership Institute Fellow. He circumnavigated the world in the Fall 2009
Semester-At-Sea program, visiting 10 nations and four continents.
